Quick answers
Four things to know firstWhat diameter do most nostril hoops sit at?
Most nostril hoops sit between 7–9mm inner diameter, with 8mm the most popular for a classic look. The right size depends on your anatomy, placement, and whether you want a snug or relaxed fit.
Which gauge is standard?
20G and 18G are the most common nostril gauges in the UK. 22G is a finer option; 16G is less typical for most nostril piercings.
Solid gold or plated?
Solid 14K gold runs through the entire piece. Plated jewellery is a thin gold layer over a base metal — the plating can wear down over time.
Snug or relaxed fit?
A snug hoop sits close to the nostril (subtle). A larger diameter creates a relaxed loop (more visible). Both are correct — it's a style choice, not a sizing rule.

Diameter explainedInner diameter is the width across the inside of the hoop. It controls how the hoop sits on the nostril — closer to the skin at smaller diameters, more visible at larger ones.
For most UK nostril piercings, hoops sit comfortably between 7mm and 9mm, with 8mm the most popular. The right choice depends on your anatomy, where the piercing sits, and whether you prefer a snug fit or something more visible. Both are correct — it's a styling decision, not a sizing rule.
If you're between sizes, going up 1mm gives a slightly more relaxed look. If you're new to hoops, starting in the 7–8mm range is a safe first choice.
Gauge explained.
Thickness, not diameterGauge measures the thickness of the wire — not the size of the hoop. It needs to match your existing piercing channel, so don't go bigger or smaller than the gauge your piercer fitted you with.
For most UK nostril piercings, the existing channel is suited to 18G or 20G. 22G is a finer option for delicate looks, and 16G is less common in most nostrils. Once your channel is healed at a particular gauge, switching is best done gradually and with a piercer's help.
If you're unsure of your gauge, your piercer can confirm in seconds. You can also check by measuring your current jewellery before ordering.

14K solid gold vs plated✦ Stepoy standard
14K Solid Gold
The gold runs through the entire piece. There's no surface to wear off and no base metal hiding underneath.
- Nickel-free composition
- No plating layer to flake or wear away
- Widely chosen for everyday wear in healed piercings
- A long-standing material for fine jewellery
For comparison
Gold-Plated
A thin gold layer applied over a base metal — often brass or copper alloys. Looks similar at first glance.
- Plating can wear down over time
- Base metal sits beneath the gold layer
- Underlying alloys may contain nickel
- Less commonly used in long-term jewellery
A note on materials — what you wear every day matters most. Solid gold is widely chosen for healed-piercing jewellery because it doesn't have a plating layer that can wear away over time. If you ever experience irritation, redness, or swelling, please consult a professional piercer rather than self-diagnose.
Fit & comfort.
Everyday & overnight wearSnug fit
A snug hoop hugs the nostril, sitting close to the skin. The look is subtle, refined, and discreet from a distance. Many people prefer a closer hoop for overnight wear because there is less ring to catch on pillows or hair.
Relaxed fit
A slightly larger diameter creates a visible loop that sits a little away from the nostril. More noticeable, more open. Comfort depends on placement — some find larger hoops catch more on clothing and bedding.

Practical answers for everyday hoop wear — sizing fixes, cleaning, sleeping, and what to do if something doesn't feel right. For anything specific to your healing or anatomy, please ask a professional piercer.
Two things, in order. First check diameter — you may need to size up by 1mm for a more comfortable sit. Then check gauge — a thicker gauge than your channel can feel snug even at the right diameter. If there's any swelling or tenderness involved, leave the original jewellery in and speak to your piercer.
Most people can wear a snug-fit seamless hoop overnight without issue, especially in a fully healed piercing. If you notice the hoop catching on bedding or hair, a smaller diameter often sits more comfortably.
Unlike plated jewellery, 14K solid gold has no surface layer that can wear off. With daily wear it may dull slightly from oils, cosmetics, or cleaning products — a soft polishing cloth restores the shine. It won't flake or chip the way plating can.
A soft cloth, warm water, and mild unscented soap is enough for healed-piercing jewellery. Rinse and dry well before refitting. Avoid harsh chemicals, silver dips, or ultrasonic cleaners — they can damage finishes.
A seamless hoop has no visible join — a continuous circle that gently twists open for fitting. A hinged hoop has a small clicker mechanism. Seamless hoops give the cleanest look; hinged hoops are easier to put in alone.
