You are buying from the UK and want UK sizing
You want to switch from a stud to a seamless hoop
This guide is not for fresh or healing piercings
Hoops are not suitable for nostril piercings that are still healing. If your piercing is less than 3 months old, or your piercer has not confirmed it is fully healed, continue wearing your stud. Switching to a hoop too early is the most common cause of irritation bumps and healing setbacks. See our stud-to-hoop switching guide for when and how to make the change safely.
Quick answer
For most healed nostril piercings in the UK, buy an 8mm inner-diameter hoop in 20G (0.8mm). This is the most common combination and fits the widest range of nose shapes and placements.
If your piercing sits very close to the nostril edge and you want a snug look, try 7mm. If your piercing is higher or your nostril is wider, go with 9mm. Not sure? 8mm is the safer starting point — it is the size most of our UK customers order first.
Sizing guidance based on APP jewellery standards and our experience helping UK customers choose nostril hoop sizes.
Key Takeaways
  • 8mm is the most popular nose hoop size in the UK — it fits standard nostril placements and suits most nose shapes
  • Your piercing placement determines your size, not the size of your nose. Measure from piercing hole to nostril edge
  • 20G (0.8mm) is the most common gauge for nostril piercings in the UK. 22G is also available for a finer, more delicate look
  • Inner diameter is the measurement that matters. UK jewellery listings should state inner diameter, not outer
  • 14K solid gold and implant-grade titanium are among the materials listed by the APP as suitable for body piercings

Which diameter fits your nostril?

The right diameter depends on one thing: how far your piercing hole is from the bottom edge of your nostril. That distance is your minimum inner diameter. A lower piercing needs a smaller hoop; a higher piercing needs a larger one. The size of your nose does not determine your hoop size — placement does.

6mmVery tight huggerVery low placement, small nostrilYour piercing is right at the nostril edge and you want barely any gap
7mmSnug, close fitLow placement, subtle lookYou want a fitted hoop that hugs the nostril closely without pressing into the skin
8mm Most popularClassic nose ringStandard placement, most nose shapesYou want the most reliable starting point — visible but not oversized
9mmRelaxed, visible loopHigher placement, wider nostrilsYour piercing is higher or you prefer more breathing room
10mmBold statement hoopHigh placement, wider nostrils, aesthetic choiceYou want a dramatic look or your piercing is positioned high
Not sure between two sizes?
If you are between 7mm and 8mm, go with 8mm. A slightly larger hoop sits comfortably and is easy to wear every day. A hoop that is too tight presses into the nostril, causes irritation, and is difficult to insert. If you are still unsure, contact us for free size advice.

Which gauge should you choose?

Gauge is the thickness of the wire, not the size of the hoop. It is a separate measurement from diameter. In the UK, many nostril piercings are done at 20G (0.8mm). If you do not know your gauge, check your current jewellery or ask your piercer.

GaugeThicknessNotes
20G Most common in UK0.8mmA popular gauge among UK piercers. A good balance of delicacy and durability for everyday wear
22G0.6mmFinest option. Beautiful, barely-there wire. Pair with a comfortable (not too tight) diameter to avoid the cheese wire effect
Gauge and diameter are not the same thing
A common mistake is confusing gauge (wire thickness) with diameter (ring size). You need to know both to order correctly. For example, “8mm 20G” means an 8mm hoop made from 0.8mm-thick wire. If you only specify one measurement, you may receive the wrong jewellery.

How to measure your nose hoop size

You can measure at home in under a minute. All you need is a small piece of paper or card and a ruler with millimetre markings.

1

Position the paper

Hold a small strip of paper against the bottom edge of your nostril, on the outside of your nose.

2

Thread it through

Gently push the paper up and through your piercing hole from the outside. Let it poke out through the hole.

3

Mark the exit point

Mark the paper where it exits the piercing hole. This is the distance the hoop needs to travel around your nostril.

4

Measure and add 1mm

Flatten the paper and measure the marked distance in millimetres. Add 1mm for comfortable clearance. That number is your ideal inner diameter.

Example
If your measurement is 7mm, your ideal hoop is 8mm (7mm + 1mm clearance). If it is 6mm, try 7mm. If it is 8mm, try 9mm. The extra millimetre prevents the hoop from pressing into your nostril, which causes discomfort and irritation bumps. See our full measurement guide for more methods.

Why 14K solid gold for your nose hoop?

Material matters as much as size. The inside of your nostril is a moist environment where low-quality metals corrode, tarnish, and cause reactions. The Association of Professional Piercers (APP) lists several material categories as suitable for body piercings, including solid gold (14K minimum) and implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136).

Frequently asked questions

Is 8mm the standard nose hoop size in the UK?
Yes. 8mm inner diameter is the most commonly ordered nose hoop size in the UK. It fits standard nostril placements (just below the nostril crease), works with most nose shapes, and gives a classic look that is visible without being oversized. If you are buying your first hoop and do not know your size, 8mm is the safest starting point.
Should I buy 7mm or 8mm for a snug fit?
It depends on your placement. If your piercing sits close to the nostril edge (low placement), 7mm will give you a snug, close-fitting hoop with minimal gap. If your piercing is in the standard position just below the crease, 8mm is more likely to sit snugly without pressing into the tissue. A hoop that is too tight causes irritation, so when in doubt, choose the larger of the two.
Is 7mm too small for a nose hoop?
Not if your piercing placement supports it. 7mm fits well on low-placed piercings near the nostril edge and gives a subtle, minimal look. However, if your piercing is in a standard or higher position, 7mm will be too tight — it will press into the nostril, be difficult to insert, and may cause irritation bumps. Measure first to be sure.
Should I choose 20G or 22G for a nose hoop?
In the UK, 20G (0.8mm) is one of the most common gauges for nostril piercings. It is a good balance of delicacy and durability for everyday wear. 22G (0.6mm) is the finer, more delicate option — it gives a barely-there look but should be paired with a diameter that gives comfortable clearance. Choose 20G if you want the most common starting point, or 22G if you prefer the finest possible wire.
What size gold nose hoop should I buy?
For a 14K gold nose hoop, the sizing is the same as any other material: measure from your piercing hole to your nostril edge, add 1mm, and that is your diameter. Most people end up with 8mm in 20G. The material does not change the size — what matters is your anatomy and placement. Gold is recommended over plated metals because it is biocompatible and will not tarnish inside the nose.
How do I measure my nose for a hoop?
Hold a small strip of paper at the bottom edge of your nostril. Thread it up through your piercing hole from the outside. Mark where it exits. Flatten and measure that distance in millimetres, then add 1mm for clearance. That is your ideal inner diameter. For example, if you measure 7mm, your ideal hoop is 8mm.
Can I wear a gold nose hoop in a healed nostril piercing?
Yes — once your nostril piercing is fully healed (minimum 3 months, ideally 4–6 months, confirmed by your piercer), a hoop is a great option. 14K solid gold is among the materials listed by the APP as suitable for body piercings. It is biocompatible, available in nickel-free alloys, and resistant to tarnishing in the moist nasal environment.
Is 14K gold good for a nose hoop?
14K solid gold is one of the best materials for a nose hoop. It contains 58.3% pure gold and is alloyed with biocompatible metals (typically silver, copper, and palladium — no nickel). It is listed by the APP as suitable for body piercings, is unlikely to cause nickel-related reactions, and does not tarnish or flake. For everyday wear in a healed piercing, it is a long-term investment that lasts a lifetime.
What is the difference between inner diameter and outer diameter?
Inner diameter is the distance across the inside of the hoop — this is the measurement used by UK jewellery brands and the one that determines fit. Outer diameter measures across the outside, which is slightly larger because it includes the wire thickness on both sides. When buying a nose hoop in the UK, always check that the listing states inner diameter.
Why choose 14K solid gold instead of gold-filled for a nose hoop?
Solid gold is the same material all the way through — it cannot flake, peel, or expose a different metal underneath. Gold-filled jewellery has a layer of gold bonded over a base metal (usually brass). While more durable than gold-plated, the gold layer in gold-filled jewellery can wear through over time, especially in the moist environment inside the nose. For body jewellery you wear 24/7, solid gold is the safer and more durable choice.
Is a 14K solid gold nose hoop worth it for everyday wear?
Yes. Unlike plated or filled alternatives, solid gold does not degrade with daily wear, moisture, or skin oils. A single 14K hoop lasts years without tarnishing, flaking, or needing replacement — which makes it more cost-effective long-term than repeatedly buying cheaper rings that deteriorate. It is also a comfortable option for sensitive skin, since nickel-free 14K gold is unlikely to cause the allergic reactions associated with nickel-containing metals.
What size 14K gold nose hoop should I buy for a healed nostril piercing?
For a healed nostril piercing in the UK, start with 8mm inner diameter in 20G. This is the most common size and fits the majority of standard placements. If your piercing is low, try 7mm. If it is higher, try 9mm. All three sizes are available in 14K solid gold. See our measurement guide above to find your exact fit.
Is 8mm 20G the best starting size for a gold nostril hoop?
For most UK nostril piercings with standard placement, yes. 8mm inner diameter gives a classic, everyday look, and 20G is one of the most common gauges used by UK piercers. If you are ordering your first gold hoop and are not sure of your exact fit, 8mm 20G is the single most reliable starting point.
Can I leave a 14K solid gold nose hoop in all the time?
Yes. 14K solid gold is specifically designed for long-term body wear. It is biocompatible, resistant to corrosion in the moist nasal environment, and unlikely to cause metal-related skin reactions. Many of our customers wear their gold seamless hoop 24/7 — sleeping, showering, exercising — without removing it. The seamless design means no clasps or openings to catch on pillows or towels.
Is 10mm too big for a nostril hoop?
Not necessarily. 10mm works well if your piercing is positioned higher on the nostril (closer to the bridge) or if you have a wider nostril and prefer a relaxed, statement look with more visible gap. However, for standard or low placements, 10mm will hang noticeably below the nostril edge and may feel too loose. Measure your piercing-to-edge distance — if it is 9mm or more, 10mm is the right fit.
What is better for a nose hoop — 9K or 14K gold?
In the UK, 9K (37.5% gold) is common in traditional jewellery, but for body piercings, 14K (58.3% gold) is preferred. 14K has a richer colour, higher biocompatibility, and better resistance to tarnishing in the moist nasal environment. The APP lists 14K as the minimum karat it considers suitable for body jewellery. 9K contains a higher proportion of alloy metals, which can increase the risk of skin reactions.
