Key takeaways
  • Nostril piercings take 3-6 months to fully heal
  • Watery eyes and sneezing during piercing are normal reflexes, not pain indicators
  • Bumps inside the nostril during months 1-3 are common irritation bumps, not infection
  • Switch to a hoop at month 3-4 earliest, with piercer approval
  • The nose is a high-moisture environment — quality jewellery is essential

Healing timeline

Day 1-3
Fresh piercing
Tender, swollen, may bleed slightly. Watery eyes and sneezing are normal reflexes (nose and tear ducts are connected). The inside may feel congested.
Week 1-4
Early healing
Swelling subsides. Crusts form around the jewellery — normal healing sign. Nose may feel stuffy on the pierced side. Do not pick at crusts.
Month 1-3
Intermediate
Looks much better externally. You may feel a small bump inside — usually irritation, not infection. Internal healing continues. Be patient.
Month 3-6
Fully healed
Most nostrils are healed enough for jewellery change at month 3-4. For the stud-to-hoop switch, check with your piercer first.

What is normal

Watery eyes during piercing: reflex, not pain. Normal and temporary.

Sneezing: nerve reflex. May last a few hours post-piercing.

Stuffy feeling: the pierced side may feel slightly congested for weeks.

Crusting: dried lymph around the stud. Saline dissolves it gently.

Inside bump: common at month 1-3. Usually irritation from the jewellery post. Resolves with saline care.

Warning signs

Green or foul discharge: possible infection. See a doctor.

Increasing pain after week 2: should be decreasing.

Spreading redness: beyond the piercing hole area.

Persistent outside bump: likely caused by jewellery quality, premature hoop switch, or touching. Address the cause.

Aftercare protocol

Saline spray twice daily. Inside and outside the nostril. Let it sit, then pat dry.

No touching. Especially difficult with nose piercings — be conscious of face-touching habits.

No makeup over the piercing. Keep foundation and skincare away from the hole.

Blow your nose gently. Aggressive nose-blowing can dislodge the stud or irritate the channel.

No swimming for 4 weeks minimum.

When to switch to a hoop

Minimum: month 3. Only if healing has been smooth with zero bumps or discharge.

Recommended: month 4-6. More time means a more stable channel and smoother transition.

Have your piercer do it. The first hoop insertion should be professional to ensure correct sizing and clean placement.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my eyes water when I get my nose pierced?
The nasolacrimal duct connects your nose and tear ducts. Stimulating the nostril nerve triggers a reflex tear response. It is involuntary, painless, and completely normal. It does not indicate excessive pain.
Can I blow my nose during healing?
Yes, but gently. Press the un-pierced nostril and blow softly through the pierced side. Avoid aggressive blowing. Use a tissue, not your fingers, and avoid touching the jewellery.
My nose stud keeps falling out. What do I do?
Bone studs and L-shapes can come loose. Ask your piercer to switch to a corkscrew (more secure) or flat-back labret (most secure). If jewellery falls out during healing, reinsert quickly — nostril piercings can start closing within hours.
