Lobe Piercing: Your Complete Guide to Stacking, Second Piercings & Gold Hoops
Where most piercing journeys begin — and where they get truly interesting. Second lobes, third lobes, curated stacks with matching gold hoops.
Beyond the first lobe: stacking & styling
A single lobe piercing is a classic. But the real magic happens when you start stacking. A second lobe piercing sits just above the first, and a third above that — creating a vertical line of jewellery up the earlobe. With coordinated hoops in graduated sizes (8mm, 9mm, 10mm from top to bottom), the effect is elegant, intentional, and unmistakably curated.
Lobe piercings are the most forgiving piercings to get: minimal pain (2-3 out of 10), fast healing (6-8 weeks), and almost everyone is anatomically suited for at least two or three. They're also the foundation of the 'curated ear' trend — lobe hoops form the base layer that helix, tragus, and conch piercings build upon.
Lobe Piercing types & variations
How much does it hurt?
The lobe is the gentlest piercing you can get. The earlobe is soft tissue with good blood supply — no cartilage, no crunching, no resistance. Most people describe it as a brief pinch, like a quick snap of a rubber band. It's over before you've processed that it happened. If you're nervous about getting your first piercing, the lobe is the perfect starting point.
| Piercing | Pain |
|---|---|
| Lobe | 2-3/10 |
| Nostril / Septum | 3-4/10 |
| Helix | 4-5/10 |
| Tragus | 5-6/10 |
| Conch / Daith | 5-6/10 |
| Rook | 6-7/10 |
Healing timeline
Best jewellery
During healing:your piercer will fit a flat-back labret stud or a small ball-end stud. These stay in place and allow the piercing to heal without catching on clothing or bedding.
Once healed:huggie hoops are the most popular lobe earring style. Small, close-fitting hoops that 'hug' the earlobe. 8-10mm is the most common range. Sold individually at Stepoy so you can mix sizes for a graduated stack.
| Size | Look | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 8mm | Small, close-fitting huggie | Third lobe, subtle |
| 9mm | Classic huggie size | Second lobe |
| 10mm Popular | Standard lobe hoop | First lobe |
| 11-12mm | Larger, more visible | Statement, or larger lobes |

Clean twice dailywith saline spray. Lobe piercings are low-maintenance but still need consistent aftercare for the first 6-8 weeks. Spray both sides, let it dry naturally or pat with kitchen roll.
Don't twist or rotate. The old advice of 'turning' your earring is outdated and harmful. Leave the jewellery still — movement introduces bacteria and irritates the healing channel.
Sleeping:Try not to sleep directly on a fresh lobe piercing for the first 2-3 weeks. After that, lobes are generally tough enough to handle normal sleeping positions. Much less of a concern than with cartilage piercings.
Lobe vs helix: comparison
| Lobe | Helix | |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Soft, vascular | Firm cartilage |
| Pain | 2-3/10 | 4-5/10 |
| Healing | 6-8 weeks | 3-9 months |
| Aftercare | Basic, short-term | Strict, long-term |
| Best for | Stacking, everyday wear | Curated ear, statement |
Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
How many lobe piercings can I get?
Most people can fit 2-3 piercings on each earlobe, depending on lobe size. Some people with larger lobes can fit 4. Your piercer will assess the spacing and advise what's possible for your anatomy.
Should I get both ears done at the same time?
Yes — getting both ears pierced in the same session is perfectly safe and very common. It means both heal simultaneously, and you only need to go through the aftercare process once.
Are your hoops sold as pairs?
No — they're sold individually. This is intentional: most customers with multiple lobe piercings want different sizes for each. Simply add two of the same size to your basket if you'd like a matching pair.
20G or 22G for lobe piercings?
Most standard lobe piercings are 20G. If your piercings were done with a gun (e.g. at a high-street shop), they're likely 20G. 22G is our finest gauge for an ultra-delicate, barely-there look. Both are comfortable for everyday wear.
