Double & Triple Helix Piercing: Styling Guide
- Double helix: two piercings along the upper ear rim, 4-6mm apart
- Triple helix: three piercings creating a cascade effect along the rim
- Graduated sizing (6mm, 7mm, 8mm top to bottom) creates the most striking visual
- Most piercers recommend healing one at a time for best results
- Total healing for a complete stack can take 12-18 months
What are stacked helix piercings?
Stacked helix piercings are multiple piercings placed along the upper cartilage rim of the ear. Instead of a single hoop, you wear two or three rings that create a deliberate, curated pattern. The helix is one of the few piercing locations with enough space for multiple placements — making it the foundation of most curated ear designs.
The key to a beautiful stack is intentional planning. Random placement looks cluttered; considered spacing and graduated jewellery sizes look editorial. The difference between an amateur and a professional stack is measured in millimetres.
The double helix
Two piercings along the upper rim, typically 4-6mm apart. This is the most popular stacking option because it strikes the perfect balance between statement and subtlety. With two graduated hoops, you get an intentional, designed look without overwhelming the ear.
Best sizing: 7mm (upper) and 8mm (lower), or 6mm and 7mm for a more subtle effect. The upper ring should be slightly smaller than the lower one — this follows the natural curve of the ear and looks more polished.
Pain: 4-5/10 per piercing. If done simultaneously, the second piercing often feels slightly more intense because adrenaline from the first has started to wear off.
The triple helix
Three piercings in a vertical cascade — the most dramatic helix arrangement. A triple stack with graduated gold hoops is one of the most popular looks in modern ear curation. It requires good anatomy (enough ear rim length) and careful planning.
Best sizing: 6mm (top), 7mm (middle), 8mm (bottom). This graduated pattern follows the expanding curve of the ear rim and creates a waterfall effect that looks effortless but is actually precisely calculated.
Graduated sizing guide

| Classic Popular | 6mm | 7mm | 8mm | Perfect cascade |
| Bold | 7mm | 8mm | 9mm | Statement triple |
| Uniform | 7mm | 7mm | 7mm | Clean, minimal |
Planning your stack
Start from the top. Most piercers recommend getting the highest piercing first, then working down. This makes it easier to judge spacing for subsequent piercings.
Spacing matters. 4-6mm between piercings is standard. Too close and the rings can overlap or interfere during healing. Too far apart and it looks like separate piercings rather than a deliberate stack.
Consult your piercer. Bring reference photos of the look you want. An experienced piercer will mark the placement points and have you approve before piercing. This is not a decision to rush.
Mix and match. You do not need to wear all hoops. Some people combine a hoop with a flat-back stud, or mix gold with gemstone pieces. The stack is a canvas for personal expression.
Healing multiple piercings
Two at once: most piercers are comfortable doing two helix piercings in one session. Healing takes 3-6 months for standard helix. The piercings will heal simultaneously, so extra care is needed.
Three at once: possible but not always recommended. Three healing piercings on one ear means triple the sensitivity, triple the aftercare, and a higher chance of complications. Many piercers suggest getting two, waiting 3-4 months, then adding the third.
Staggered approach: the safest option. Get one, let it heal fully (3-6 months), then get the next. Total time for a triple stack: 9-18 months. The result looks identical to a same-day triple — but the healing journey is much smoother.
