A little help with the fit

How to choose your conch ring size

Not sure where to start? Let’s work through it.

GaugeHow thick the wire is.
Inner diameterThe space inside the hoop.

Find the question you came with

I don’t know my conch ring size. Where do I start?Start with your piercing and the jewellery you wear now.

If you wear a stud, its post length won’t tell you which hoop to buy. A conch hoop also needs room to curve around the outer edge of your ear.

For your first hoop, ask your piercer to check the fit around your actual piercing and note down both the gauge and inner diameter. Let them know whether you would like a closer fit or a little more space.

If you already wear a comfortable round hoop, check its original order or use the measuring guide below.

You don’t need to know every measurement before contacting us. Tell us what you currently wear and the look you have in mind, and we’ll help you work out what to check.

Can I measure my ear if I only wear a stud?A ruler can give a reference, but not the complete fit.

With your ear relaxed, hold a millimetre ruler beside it and note the distance from the centre of the piercing to the outer edge the hoop would pass around. Keep your hair tucked aside and avoid pulling or flattening your ear.

This helps describe your placement, but it is not automatically the inner diameter to order. The rim’s curve, tissue thickness, back of the ear and piercing angle also affect the space a circle needs.

Please don’t put paper or measuring tools through the hole. There isn’t a universal “add 1mm” rule for conch hoops. If you haven’t worn a hoop here before, an in-person fitting will give you a more useful measurement.

Which inner diameter should I choose: 10–15mm?These are available sizes, rather than fixed snug or loose fits.

Choose from 10mm, 11mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm and 15mm inner diameters, in 1mm steps.

The right size depends on where your piercing sits and the edge the ring needs to clear. A 10mm hoop may fit one ear comfortably and be too small for another. A 15mm hoop may be needed for a comfortable fit, rather than an oversized look.

There is no single diameter that fits every conch. Start with a known comfortable hoop or a fitting, rather than choosing the smallest number for a delicate look.

If your recommended fit falls outside this range, please don’t choose a smaller hoop just to fit the options.

What are 16G and 18G? How do I know mine?Gauge is wire thickness. It is separate from inner diameter.
16G1.2mm wire
18G1.0mm wire

Check your piercing record or previous jewellery order for G / gauge or wire thickness. If it is unknown, your piercer can measure the jewellery.

If your current piece is 16G, an 18G hoop is thinner. Please check whether a change suits your piercing rather than choosing purely for a finer appearance.

If you wear 14G, that is approximately 1.6mm, so neither option matches it. A photo or ordinary ruler cannot reliably identify these small differences. Never force thicker wire through a narrower channel.

How snug should a conch hoop fit?A close fit should leave your ear in its natural shape.

The hoop should clear the ear’s edge without squeezing the rim, pulling at the hole or folding the ear inwards. Check how it sits at the front and back.

A little visible space can be part of a comfortable fit. If your ring feels comfortable but looks roomier than you would like, confirm its diameter before comparing a nearby size at the same gauge.

Pressure, an indentation or discomfort is a reason to have the fit checked. Thinner wire won’t make a too-small circle fit around your ear, and a smaller diameter won’t necessarily make an angled hoop lie flat.

How do I measure a hoop I already own?Measure the inside of a round hoop, excluding the wire.

Check the original order first. If you have a spare round hoop, lay it flat beside a millimetre ruler. Measure straight across the centre from inner edge to inner edge.

INNER DIAMETERExclude the wire on both sides
Measurement illustration · not to scale

For example, an 18G hoop with a 12mm inner diameter is approximately 14mm across the outside. Ordering a 14mm inner diameter would give you a larger hoop.

A shaped clicker or hoop with a straight bar may fit differently from a true circle, even with the same labelled size. If measuring worn jewellery means removing it, only do so when the piercing is fully healed and you can change it comfortably. Even healed piercings can shrink when left empty.

Can you help me choose from a photo?A photo helps explain the placement and the look you’d like.

You’re welcome to send a clear photo of the whole ear, with the conch hole identified, plus a side or back view if you can take one comfortably. Keep the ear relaxed.

Tell us whether you wear a stud or hoop, whether it feels comfortable and what you’d like to change. Include any measurements you have; it’s fine if they are unknown.

Photos cannot reliably confirm gauge, exact diameter or whether a piercing is ready for a hoop. A model’s ring size may not create the same look on your ear. We may suggest an in-person fitting before you order.

Can I change my conch stud to a seamless hoop?A stud’s post length is not a hoop’s inner diameter.

An 8mm stud does not mean you need an 8mm hoop. A post passes through the ear; the hoop also curves around its outer edge.

STEPOY seamless hoops are for fully healed piercings. Looking settled on the outside or reaching a particular date does not confirm readiness. If the piercing is tender, swollen, producing crust or you’re unsure, ask your piercer to check it before changing.

For a first hoop, your piercer can assess the placement, choose a comfortable fit and help with insertion and closing. A very close-fitting style may need more time even after initial healing.

Will the same size work across different conch designs?Compare the measurements, then where the design meets your ear.

For Solis, Ember and other conch designs, compare the stated gauge and inner diameter first. A comfortable round hoop you already own is a useful reference.

Look at where any wrapped wire, textured section or decoration will sit, particularly where the ring passes around your ear or beside other jewellery.

Matching size numbers don’t guarantee an identical feel across every design. Send us the piece you like and what you currently wear if you would like help comparing them.

Your product choices stay as you left them.

A handmade 14ct solid gold conch ring designed to wrap cleanly around the outer edge of the ear. Most healed conch piercings wear 16G or 18G and require a larger inner diameter, commonly around 10–12mm. Measure carefully, as conch placement and ear anatomy vary considerably.

The details that matter

A solid-gold conch hoop handmade in the diameter and gauge that suit your ear.

1. Why you’ll love it

A minimal solid-gold hoop designed to wrap cleanly around the outer edge of your ear. Its simple, uninterrupted shape gives a healed conch piercing a polished finish without overpowering the rest of your ear stack.

Designed for fully healed conch piercings.

2. Material & finish

Made from genuine 14ct solid gold — never plated or gold-filled.

  • Available in yellow, white or rose gold
  • Nickel-free
  • Suitable for sensitive, fully healed piercings
  • Made for long-term everyday wear
  • Will not flake or reveal a base metal
3. Choosing your size

The inner diameter determines how closely the hoop wraps around the edge of your ear:

  • 10mm: a closer fit for smaller ears or shallow placements
  • 11mm: a balanced, neatly wrapped look
  • 12mm: a popular relaxed fit for many conch piercings
  • 13–15mm: more room for larger ears or deeper placements

Choose the same gauge as your current jewellery. 16G is common for conch piercings, while 18G creates a slightly finer look.

Conch placement and ear anatomy vary considerably, so measuring an existing well-fitting hoop or asking your piercer is the safest way to choose.

4. Wearing your seamless hoop

Open the hoop by gently twisting the ends sideways in opposite directions. Do not pull the ends directly apart, as this can distort its shape.

Guide one end through your healed piercing, then twist the ends back into alignment. If the piercing is difficult to reach, ask a professional piercer to fit it for you.

5. What’s included

Your order includes:

  • Your handmade 14ct solid gold conch hoop
  • STEPOY jewellery box
  • STEPOY gift bag
  • Thank-you card
