A little help with the fit

How to choose your helix ring size

Not sure where to start? Let’s work through it.

GaugeHow thick the wire is.
Inner diameterThe space inside the hoop.

Start with your piercing, then find your fit

Which type of helix piercing do I have?Outer-rim, Forward and Hidden Helix need different fit checks.

Outer-rim helix
A piercing along the outer cartilage rim of your ear. A round hoop needs enough room to pass around that rim, including the fold at the back.

Forward helix
At the front of the upper ear, near where it meets your face. Space and angle vary: ask your piercer whether a round seamless hoop suits your exact placement before choosing its diameter.

Hidden helix
Usually tucked beneath the upper ear fold. The fold can conceal the piercing and part of the jewellery. Have your piercer assess whether a round hoop suits the channel and has enough clearance beneath the fold.

Not sure which you have? A clear whole-ear photo can help us discuss the location. It cannot confirm the exact size or whether this hoop will fit.

6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 9mm and 10mm are available inner diameters — not a fit recommendation for every helix placement.

I don’t know my size. Can I measure my ear?You can take a reference measurement, but it is not the whole fit.

For an outer-rim helix, look at how far the piercing is from the edge the hoop will go around.

  1. Tuck your hair aside and let your ear sit naturally. Do not pull or flatten the rim.
  2. Hold a small millimetre ruler beside the ear without pressing into the skin.
  3. Note the distance from the centre of the hole to the rim the hoop needs to clear.

This is a placement reference, not automatically the inner diameter to order. It leaves out the back of the ear, the folded edge and the angle of the piercing.

Do not put measuring tools or paper through the hole. There is no universal “add 1mm” rule. This outer-rim measurement should not be used to size a Forward or Hidden Helix.

For your first hoop, a piercer can check a round ring around your actual placement and write down both the gauge and inner diameter.

Which inner diameter should I choose: 6–10mm?These are 1mm size steps, not fixed snug or loose categories.

Available inner diameters are 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 9mm and 10mm. A 6mm ring may sit comfortably on one ear and press into another. No single diameter suits every helix piercing.

The hole-to-edge distance, the rim’s fold and the channel angle all affect the fit. A high helix is not automatically farther from the edge than a lower one.

If you have no known hoop size: start with the placement check above and have the fit assessed. Do not select the smallest ring just because you want a delicate look.

For a double or triple helix, check each hole separately. Neighbouring piercings can need different diameters, even when you want a matching set.

What are 18G and 20G? How do I know mine?Gauge is wire thickness. A higher G number means a thinner wire.
18G1.0mm wire
20G0.8mm wire

Check your piercing record or previous jewellery order for gauge / G or wire thickness. If it is unknown, ask your piercer to measure the jewellery.

A photo of your jewellery being worn, an ordinary ruler or the size of an earlobe earring cannot reliably tell you your helix gauge.

Currently wearing 16G? That is 1.2mm wire, so neither listed option is the same thickness. Ask your piercer whether changing to a finer gauge suits your piercing before ordering.

Do not force thicker wire through a narrower channel. Thinner wire does not make a too-small diameter fit around your ear.

How snug should it fit? What if it sticks out?A close fit can still have a little visible space.

A comfortable hoop should clear the rim without pinching, squeezing the fold or pulling at the hole. Check the front and back of the ear.

If the hoop points outward, the channel angle can be part of the reason. A smaller ring will not necessarily make it lie flat, and may add pressure.

Comfortable but too roomy-looking? First confirm your current diameter. Compare a nearby size while keeping the gauge the same.

Pressure, an indentation or discomfort needs a fit assessment. Do not bend the ring against your ear or keep sizing down to remove every visible gap.

Can you tell my helix size from a photo? We can discuss placement and appearance; exact size needs a reliable reference.

You can contact us even if you don’t know your size. Show the whole ear with the exact hole identified, then a side or back view if you can take one comfortably.

Tell us whether you wear a stud or hoop, and whether you want a closer fit, more space or help with a part that presses or catches. Keep the ear relaxed and hair tucked aside.

A photo helps explain your question, but cannot reliably identify an unknown gauge or exact inner diameter. We may suggest an in-person fitting before you order.

A model’s photo can show a look you like. Their ring size may not create that look on your ear.

How do I measure a hoop I already own?Measure the inside opening, not the outside of the ring.

First check the original order for the stated gauge and inner diameter.

If your piercing is fully healed and you can comfortably change the jewellery, lay the removed round hoop flat beside a millimetre ruler. Measure straight across from inner edge to inner edge.

INNER DIAMETERExclude the wire on both sides
Measurement illustration · not to scale

An 18G ring with a 6mm inner diameter is approximately 8mm across the outside. Ordering an 8mm inner diameter would give you a larger ring.

If your current piece is oval or has a straight wearable bar, compare its usable internal shape as well. Its labelled diameter may not transfer directly to a true circular hoop.

Can I change my helix stud to a seamless hoop?A stud’s post length does not tell you the ring diameter.

A 6mm stud does not mean you need a 6mm hoop. The post passes through your ear; the ring also needs room to curve around its edge.

STEPOY seamless hoops are for fully healed piercings. Elapsed time alone does not confirm readiness. If the piercing is tender, crusting or swollen, or you’re unsure whether it has healed, ask your piercer to check it before changing jewellery.

For your first hoop, a piercer can assess the placement, confirm fit and help with insertion. Forward and Hidden Helix placements need their own assessment rather than the same outer-rim size.

Does the same size work across different helix designs?Start with the measurements, then check the exact piece.

Compare the stated gauge and inner diameter on each product page, whether you are choosing Solis, Ember or another helix design.

If you already wear a comfortable round hoop, its measurements are useful context. Also check where the new design will sit against your ear, especially around a tight fold or beside other jewellery.

Matching size numbers or the word “helix” do not guarantee an identical fit for every design or placement. If you are unsure, show us the product you want and the hole you intend to wear it in.

The details that matter

A timeless solid-gold helix hoop, handmade for the fit and finish you want.

1. Why you’ll love it

A clean, lightweight hoop designed to wrap neatly around the outer edge of your ear. Wear it alone for a minimal look or pair it with your lobe and cartilage jewellery to build an effortless ear stack.

Designed for fully healed helix piercings.

2. Material & finish

Made from genuine 14ct solid gold — never plated or gold-filled.

  • Available in yellow, white or rose gold
  • Nickel-free
  • Suitable for sensitive, fully healed piercings
  • Made for long-term everyday wear
  • Will not flake or reveal a base metal
3. Choosing your size

The inner diameter determines how closely the hoop wraps around the edge of your ear:

  • 6mm: close and compact
  • 7mm: a balanced everyday fit
  • 8mm: a looser, more visible hoop

Choose the same gauge as your current jewellery. 18G is common for cartilage piercings, while 20G creates a finer look.

Your ideal diameter depends on the position of your piercing and the thickness of your ear. Measure an existing well-fitting hoop or ask your piercer if you are unsure.

4. Wearing your seamless hoop

Open the hoop by gently twisting the ends sideways in opposite directions. Do not pull the ends directly apart, as this can distort its shape.

Guide one end through your healed piercing, then twist the ends back into alignment. If the piercing is difficult to reach, ask a professional piercer to fit it for you.

5. What’s included

Your order includes:

  • Your handmade 14ct solid gold hoop
  • STEPOY jewellery box
  • STEPOY gift bag

Really love how this sits. It's subtle from some angles and then you notice the hoop underneath.

Cute once it's in. I probably would've chosen a tiny bit more room, but the style itself is really nice.

Really like the hidden helix look. Mine sits a little closer than I pictured, but I still love the effect.

I was worried it might look awkward from the side but it actually sits really nicely.

This made my ear stack look way more finished without adding another busy piece.

I like the idea, but I picked a fit that's a bit too snug for my ear. I'd size up next time.

Honestly one of my favourite things in my ear right now. The hidden helix look is so clean.

The hidden helix look is so cute. From the front it gives that little drop effect without looking too much.

I wanted something a bit different for my helix and this was exactly the vibe.

Very cute and not as obvious as a normal outer helix hoop, which is exactly why I bought it.
